The Image that Captured a Family Moment
This photo was shot in 1987 by Hungarian photographer Attila Manek. It shows his wife Marti and their daughter Enikő who was just a baby. They were shopping in the market in Budapest.
It was nothing special when it was shot – just a simple everyday family moment. Marti was carrying the groceries while the baby girl was placed inside a big transparent bag along with an apple she was holding and eating.
Years passed and this photo became popular around the Internet. Now it is an iconic example of how one picture can capture a moment in family life.
The Original Picture Was Taken in 1987
The original photo was shot in Budapest, on Museum Boulevard. The unconventional composition immediately gave the photograph its distinct character. Marti had groceries with her, whereas her young daughter was sitting in a big plastic bag.
As per the descriptions given in regard to the photo, the photo was supposed to depict the pressure experienced by working moms. Manek was interested in depicting the tough “second shift” experience of the individuals, which included all the domestic and family-related activities following their working hours.
The Baby Eventuality Became a Scientist
The baby girl featured in the photo was none other than Enikő Manek, the photographer’s own daughter.
About three decades after taking the first photo, the baby had grown up to become an adult and a scientist in chemistry. Manek herself was continuing with her career in the form of being a translator and writer until she worked with a medical company.
This aspect further added to the significance of the photo when it was contrasted with its recreation many years later.
The Photo Went Viral After Many Years
The original photo appeared again on the Internet and gained a lot of attention.
Many were intrigued by the weird situation, as well as the similarities of the mother depicted in the picture and Princess Diana, although such a comparison is only an opinion of Internet users.
After some time, Attila Manek found out that his old photo was being widely circulated on social media websites. There were also some concerns about what became of the mother and her baby in the photo.
Recreated Scene in the Family
Having observed that many publications used the initial picture, Manek decided to recreate it again but with the same participants.
This time, the photo was made in 2020, which is about 33 years after the original one.
It should be mentioned that Enikő grew up in the meantime and became an adult girl. The most interesting fact is that she held the original picture while recreating the pose with her mother.
Museum Boulevard vs Budafok Market
While the original photograph was made on Museum Boulevard, the recreation was shot at Budafok market in Budapest.
The family preserved the core idea of the picture but adapted it for the modern age.
Instead of a baby sitting in the shopping bag, the grown-up Enikő joined the family in making a funny photo.
A Family Story Behind the Two Pictures
The two pictures say more than just before-and-after one.
The first one shows the mother and daughter having fun while buying things in 1987. The second one shows the same people thirty years later.
Combined, they tell the story of time passing in ways that typical family photos don’t.
The Significance of the Original Picture
As per the family, Manek’s original concept was tied to the pressures faced by mothers who had to juggle work with their domestic responsibilities.
Later his daughter elaborated that the photograph was intended to show how mothers could feel under pressure due to their responsibilities after returning home – including caring for their children along with completing their daily chores such as grocery shopping.Humor brought out by plastic bags aside, the underlying message was tied to the realities of family life.
Over Three Decades Captured in One Picture
The picture recreates a rare chance to see the mother-daughter duo at very different stages in life.
While in the original photograph, Enikő was just a baby. The latter photo shows her all grown up standing beside her mother.
Though the place, clothes, and the surroundings might have been altered, the relationship remains the heart of the photograph.
A Memento of How Fast Time Flies
What started as an informal picture taken at a Budapest market turned into the visual record of an entire generation.
The tale of Marti and Enikő demonstrates how photographs have the power to capture mundane moments which might be nothing much to talk about at the time they are captured but which gain significance over time.
The fact that 33 years had passed since the original photo was taken and that the re-created photo provided a rare glimpse into the same mother and daughter duo speaks volumes of what has been left unchanged over all these years.
